From the City of Grimes:
The new Grimes Public Library building will open to the public on January 30, 2024. The 22,300 sq ft space has an expanded collection, playscape with a slide, five study rooms, and public meeting rooms. There is a fireplace, coffee bar, Everbright wall, and a drive-thru for book returns and holds pick up. Plus, there is a mezzanine level that will feature the teen collection and video games.
“Our city has grown substantially since our old building was built and is continuing to grow at a rapid pace,” said Library Director Cheryl Heid. “We were running out of space. This new building will give us room to better serve our community.”
The new library will have a comfort room designed for nursing mothers and individuals who need a break from too much sensory stimulation. This typically includes individuals with autism, other sensory issues, or people with disabilities who may need a safe and quiet space. There are also adult-sized changing tables available. Not having these changing tables in public spaces often keeps families with older children with special needs from being able to enjoy public spaces for longer periods.
“Libraries are unique spaces that are welcome to everyone. Whether our space is a place to meet a friend, learn a new activity, or enjoy your favorite book – we hope this new space brings you joy and shows how Grimes is truly a great place to live,” said Heid.
The roughly $12 million building is being paid for through L.O.S.S.T. funds, donations, and city and library funds. It is located at the corner of North James and Beaverbrooke Blvd.
